Ä‚n Lành-Ân Lòng

Illustration, 2021

“Ä‚n Lành-Ân Lòng” (translated to Eat Good - In Gratitude) started

as a an attempt to record my meals as part of a creative muscle

training and a new healthy diet. To draw is to trace the tactile feels of touching/smelling/tasting food, the people and the conversation.

Food has been known to bridge cultures. It is a time machine in one bite. Food becomes a part of us - a fact we often overlook. Ä‚n Lành-Ân Lòng is how I celebrate the abundance of food and connect to far-away cultures. This is how I practice eating in mindfulness and gratitude, and how I recognise the gifts of Nature using my own gift.

“Thich Nhat Hanh has said that we can see a piece of food as an “ambassador of the cosmos.” If we stop and think about it, it’s true! Rain, sunshine, the work of a farmer are all contained in the humble carrot on our plate. If we take time to connect in that way, even a quick snack can be a cosmic experience.”

During lockdown, food
is a form of consolation, a stage for creativity, a chance to get tactile with all our senses.

Many renewed their relationship with food during the pandemic,
I was one too.

Ä‚n Lành-Ân Lòng is part a visual diary, part a practice in mindful eating. Food becomes me, and becomes what I exhale with my brush.
